Teaching Students How to Think: How FIE Strengthens Learning for Life

We believe learning is about so much more than improving grades or finishing homework. Our goal has always been to help students become confident, capable, and independent learners by strengthening the way they think.

That's why we're so excited to introduce Feuerstein's Instrumental Enrichment (FIE) as part of our growing Educational Therapy programs.

This summer, Ashley and I completed training in FIE because we're always looking for evidence-based tools that align with our philosophy and allow us to better serve our students and families. Every member of our educational therapy team also participated in additional professional development this summer because we believe the best therapists are lifelong learners.

The more we learned about FIE, the more excited we became. Not because it replaces what we already do, but because it strengthens it.

What Is FIE?

Feuerstein's Instrumental Enrichment (FIE) is a cognitive intervention designed to help students think more clearly, efficiently, and effectively.

Instead of teaching academic content, FIE strengthens the underlying thinking skills that make learning possible. It helps students develop the concepts, strategies, and mental processes they need to become confident, independent learners.

FIE strengthens essential executive functioning and cognitive skills, including:

  • Planning and organization

  • Problem solving

  • Flexible thinking

  • Attention and focus

  • Self-regulation

  • Strategic thinking

  • Reasoning and decision making

Rather than simply helping students find the correct answer, FIE teaches them how to approach problems thoughtfully, recognize patterns, organize information, and develop strategies they can use across every area of learning and everyday life.

Simply put, FIE doesn't teach students what to think. It teaches them how to think.

How FIE Works with Educational Therapy

One of the questions we've already been asked is, "How is FIE different from Educational Therapy?"

The answer is that they work beautifully together.

Educational Therapy has always been the foundation of our work at LELC. Through the Discovery Program, we help students strengthen cognition, perception, academics, and the emotional aspects of learning. Every lesson is designed to help students become more intentional, confident learners while building the skills they need for long-term success. We don’t teach students what to think, we teach them how to think.

FIE complements that work by providing another structured way to strengthen the thinking processes behind learning. It gives us additional tools to target executive functioning, reasoning, planning, and problem solving while continuing the individualized, relationship-centered approach our families know and trust.

Instead of simply helping students complete today's assignments, we're helping them build thinking skills they'll use for a lifetime.

Why This Matters for Students with ADHD

One of the reasons we're especially excited about FIE is how naturally it supports students who struggle with executive functioning, including many children with ADHD.

Children with ADHD often know what to do, but organizing how to do it can be the greatest challenge. Planning, prioritizing, managing time, staying focused, controlling impulses, and monitoring their own work can all become obstacles, even when they're bright, capable learners.

FIE directly targets these foundational thinking skills by teaching students to slow down, organize their thinking, develop strategies, and become more intentional learners.

Rather than asking students to simply "try harder" or “stay focused” FIE helps build the cognitive tools that make learning more efficient, successful, and less frustrating.

It's Never Too Late to Strengthen the Way We Think

One of the most exciting opportunities this year is expanding FIE beyond our school-age students. We're thrilled to begin offering small-group FIE sessions for adults with ADHD.

Executive functioning challenges don't disappear when we become adults. Many adults continue to struggle with organization, planning, time management, follow-through, and balancing the demands of work, family, and everyday life.

These small groups will focus on strengthening the same thinking processes we teach our students while providing practical strategies adults can immediately apply in their daily lives.

Whether you're a parent, college student, or working professional, it's never too late to develop stronger thinking habits.

Growing Together

As LELC continues to grow, our mission remains the same. We want every student, every family, and now every adult we serve to discover that growth is possible.

Adding FIE is another step in that mission. It complements the Educational Therapy we already provide, equips our therapists with additional evidence-based tools, and allows us to continue expanding our services while maintaining the individualized care our families have come to expect. We believe intelligence is not fixed. Every learner has the ability to grow, develop stronger ways of thinking, and become more confident in the learning process.

We are honored to walk alongside our students and families as they discover just how capable they truly are. We can't wait to see how this new chapter helps even more learners grow with confidence, curiosity, and purpose.
